App Review: PlayKids Mobile

playkids(Available on App Store, Google Play- free download, monthly subscription fee)

If you’re looking for an app that’s going to occupy your little traveler from beginning to end of a flight without making you pay for pricey (and sometimes unreliable) in-flight wifi, PlayKids is the app for you! This well-designed, whimsical app reads like a who’s who of children’s entertainment- everyone from Daniel Tiger to Caillou to Super WHY can be downloaded right to your child’s tablet, or to your smartphone, with minimal storage requirements. Best of all, multiple episodes of each show can be downloaded, so if your child is a hardcore Peppa Pig enthusiast, she can watch a marathon of twelve episodes (you may recognize that as a 2.5-hour flight) with no commercial interruptions.

You’re probably thinking, “That’s all well and good, but how much is this going to cost me?” Well, here’s some more good news: PlayKids offers a monthly subscription with unlimited downloads for $4.99- AND throws in the first month gratis as a trial period. That means you can set up your tot for an upcoming trip and not even have to worry about the five bucks coming out of your account until next month! Those of us who know the special joys of entertaining small children on a flight would probably gladly pay triple that, so it is a very good deal.

But what about performance? Are the videos low-quality, grainy, or otherwise poor? Nope- an episode of Daniel Tiger that I stupidly paid $2.99 to download in HD from iTunes looks exactly the same in quality as the PlayKids episode. Also, as there are not many 3-year-olds who are too concerned about the high-def experience, I doubt you’ll get any complaints.

The fun doesn’t stop with videos either- PlayKids offers a variety of adorable games, a music player with kiddie favorites like Old MacDonald and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, and even a “night night” mode that encourages your child to snuggle up and get cozy with some lullabies, in case he gets any delightful ideas for an in-flight nap.

PlayKids gets a very enthusiastic thumbs-up from me- set it up before your next family trip and see what you think!
